December 2015 Volunteer Spotlight —
Jen Yaich

What volunteer position(s) do you participate in at Plain City Elementary?
I have been a room representative each year for my child's class starting in kindergarten to current time. I read weekly with my child's class in first grade and currently reading with his class in second grade. Other things I have volunteered for are chaperon for Field Day, class outings, Library duty, Book Fair, COSI on Wheels and Walk-A-Thon. I also have helped my child's teachers by cutting items out for them that had been laminated and sharpening large bags of pencils for the class. I also had the pleasure helping inventory all the library books last school year.

What prompted you to volunteer and what keeps you coming back?
I initially started volunteering as a room representative so I could plan my child's class parties. This was my way of making and being a part of some of my child's school memories and it's something I really enjoy doing.
The school has many volunteer opportunities and I love being a part of my child's school day when possible. It's a good feeling knowing you are helping your child's school no matter how big or small the task may be.

What is your most fond volunteer memory in dealing with the students at PCES?
There are too many fond memories to choose just one. Through all my volunteer efforts I will always remember the big bright smiles and hugs I receive from the children at PCES.

Can you describe a time when you knew your efforts were making a difference for the teachers and/or children of PCES?
I saw through my one-on-one reading with the children that when given the extra opportunity for them to read out loud, it helps them progress in their reading.

What would you tell someone that is thinking about volunteering at PCES?

I would tell them it's an opportunity for you to help your community, see your child and help the school. It's also a great opportunity to interact with our wonderful educators that otherwise you might not get to know. It's a win-win all around! :-)
