November 2014 Volunteer Spotlight —
Connie Buckley

What Volunteer opportunities do you do?
I try to help out wherever needed! This year I’m a Room Representative; I coordinate the Author/Illustrator visit during Right to Read Week; I volunteer at the Scholastic Book Fair; I’m a General School Volunteer (photocopy, sharpen pencils, cut out manipulatives, and help in the office); I help Mrs. Yates in the library; and I work on the PTO website and Facebook page.

What motivates you to Volunteer in the school?
I love knowing what is going on in the school! My children may be able to tell me snippets about their day or tell me about their classmates, but being at the school myself, I get to interact with my children’s teachers and the staff that are a big part of shaping who my children are becoming.

Tell about an experience you had while Volunteering that made you realize you were making a difference.
Most of what I do at school does not take much effort on my part, but the teachers, staff and students are so appreciative! Being a mom of two with a full-time job out of the home, their appreciation makes me feel good about spending my free time at school.

Last year’s Author/Illustrator visit was one of my favorite daysour visitors, Christopher and Jeannette Canyon, were very engaging for both the students and teachers, and they got the school amped up for writing and using polymer clay. The look in the students’ eyes make it all worth it.

Have you seen an impact on your child(ren) because you Volunteer in the school?
Both Ben (1st Grade) and Kenzie (PreK) love to see me at school. But what I love, is that my son has recently starting volunteering! He has helped serve a meal at DNA and decorated veteran’s graves for Veteran’s Day.

What would you tell someone that is thinking about Volunteering in the school?
Just try it! It’s a great opportunity to give back to the teachers that give so much to our kids.
