PTO's March Volunteer Spotlight
Jessica Schilling
What volunteer positions do you participate in at Plain
City Elementary School?
Lunch Room,
Reading with Students, Assistant Room Rep
What prompted you to volunteer and what keeps you coming
back?
Last year, I
heard that parent volunteers were needed in the lunchroom, so I decided to come
and help. That first day opening milks, washing tables, and saying hello to all
the kids was so much fun! I knew I wanted to come back as often as I
could. There was also a volunteer opportunity in Mrs. Mitchell's classroom
last year where I was able to read with students one on one. I loved helping
the kids and getting to know them. Touching base with my own kids, helping
students, meeting other parent volunteers, saying “hello” to staff members -
all of that keeps me coming back.
What is your most fond volunteer memory dealing with
students at PCES?
This year I come
in on Monday mornings to read with children in Mrs. Greulich's First Grade
classroom. Some of the kids like to take a minute to share something
about their weekend before they start reading and I love that! The same thing
happens in the lunchroom - you really get to know the kids even if it's just a
little chat about a new pet, how they celebrated their birthday, their
weekend... etc.
Can you describe a time when you knew your efforts were
making a difference for the teachers and/or children of PCES?
I think it's
knowing that relationships are being formed. I can pick up on a
conversation I had with a student, staff member, or another parent volunteer
from earlier that month or week. Getting to know someone a little better
- makes a difference... The students remember you and they really seem to
enjoy making that connection. In addition to that, I know my
presence in the school has had a positive impact on my own children. They
look forward to the times I can come in and help.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about
volunteering at PCES?
The little
time that I have been able to give has been wonderful :) It's become a
highlight of my week.
